Die rasante Entwicklung Hamburgs zur Großstadt seit dem Großen Brand von 1842 ist von dem damals neuen Medium der Fotografie intensiv begleitet worden. Mit der Beauftragung des Hamburger Fotografen Georg Koppmann zur kontinuierlichen Dokumentation der Veränderungen des Stadtbilds durch die Baudeputation 1874 wurde dies auch als eine öffentliche Aufgabe angesehen. Bis zu seinem Tod 1909 hielt Koppmann so einschneidende Vorgänge wie den Abriss der Kehrwieder-Wandrahm-Viertel und den Bau der Speicherstadt in mehreren tausend Aufnahmen fest. Auch von anderen Fotografen sammelte die Baudeputation Ansichten der Stadt. 1928 wurde die fotografische Dokumentation des Stadtbildes mit der Einrichtung der Landesbildstelle amtlich institutionalisiert und bis 2015 kontinuierlich fortgesetzt. In dieser Tradition, die mit Namen wie Georg Koppmann, Willi Beutler oder Fritz Kempe verbunden ist, steht der Preis für Hamburger Stadtfotografie.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS SEPTEMBER 15 — NOVEMBER 15, 2022

The Rencontres d’Arles associates the Louis Roederer Discovery Award with galleries, art centers, artist-run spaces, independent venues and institutions.
They can propose an exhibition project by an artist they support and whose work has been recently discovered or deserves to be by an international audience.
Accompanied by a curator, 10 projects will be shortlisted and exhibited at the next Rencontres d’Arles.
